It’s 1984, and Michael Jackson is king – even in Waihau Bay, New Zealand. Here we meet Boy, an 11-year-old who lives on a farm with his grandma, a goat, and a younger brother who thinks he has magic powers. It's no surprise that Boy, who is also highly imaginative, has made up stories about their absent father: He's deep sea diver, a war hero, and a close relation to Michael Jackson. In reality his father is an inept hoodlum who’s spent time in jail for robbery. One day the father returns, and Boy is forced to reconcile fantasy with reality. This is one of those charming little films with a big heart, that almost fell through the cracks. Don't miss it! (Taika Waititi; New Zealand; 2010; 87 min)
